About Me
Self-taught British photographer Nathaniel Foster orbits a centre of surrealism, raising splinters of his own subconscious to marry Landscape, Street Photography, and Absent Portraiture. Inspired by his own psychology and personal history, his artworks are renowned for their emotional depth, often mirroring the deliberate self-reflection his work initiates within himself. Driven by emotion and truth, Nathaniel intentionally creates the space for his audience to project their own subconscious into the mental landscapes and narratives he creates. Often rendering the human figure redundant, Nathaniel prefers the environment, colour, and composition to deliver his work's emotional cues.
Long before the inception of his own style, Nathaniel credits his earliest tuition to the photographic world of Formula 1. Born from childhood amazement, this obsession manifested as meticulous pencil drawings, inadvertently training Nathaniel's eye in light, geometry, and framing. Today, he references legacy books such as 50 Years of The Formula One World Championship as the place he developed an appreciation for both photography and the relationship between organic and mechanical forms.
Constructing the artist we know today, Nathaniel undertook three defining assignments. The first was becoming the full-time caregiver for his grandmother. The second was transforming himself into a one-man production team—filming, editing, and producing highlights for a local football team, serving as the direct precursor to his selection for The Network at the Edinburgh TV Festival, production roles with BBC Sport, and both teaching and assisting in Film and TV classes at PQA Wallington and Sutton. Finally, his third mission was to enter a profound period of introspection. Collectively, these parallel paths converged, compelling him to pursue photography and mould the artistic practice he embodies today.
This time of caregiving and quiet contemplation ultimately laid the psychological groundwork for his creative awakening. Recognising this, his mother gifted him his first DSLR camera—the pivotal moment that saw photography become the catalyst through which Nathaniel would finally synthesize his childhood fascination with form, conscientious creativity, technical discipline, and his deeply intuitive understanding of emotion and storytelling to bring human narratives to life. Today, he showcases his work internationally, standing as a testament to his profound evolution and art’s unique power to heal, translate, and assist in redefining the self.
